Profiles Bulletin: Windows Vista Issue

March 8, 2007

Summary

The purpose of this bulletin is to advise Desktop and Universal Desktop (UDA) users about compatibility issues between Profiles Professional and Profiles Forecaster and the Microsoft Windows Vista Operating System released on January 30, 2007. Profiles Forecaster v8.0/7.6 and Profiles Professional v3.0/2.5 will function with Windows Vista, however some issues have been found.

Severity

Medium – The issues somewhat affect the user’s ability to perform operations in the software.

Impact Assessment & Recommendations

Testing was conducted on Windows Vista Home Premium and Ultimate editions with Desktop and UDA based versions of Profiles Professional v8.0/7.6 and Forecaster v3.0/2.5. The following issues related to installing the application and Profiles embedded PDF printing functionality have been found:

Issue Summary Issue Details Recommendation
Installation Issues 1. “Install window” may be hidden behind other open windows.*

2. Application does not start until user has run the application as an administrator.*

3. Vista recognizes Profiles applications as an “unidentified program wanting access to your computer”.

1. Access the install window through the Windows Toolbar

2. Right click on the Professional or Forecaster icon and select the “Run as Administrator” option. The applications will then start and work appropriately.
Click “OK” and Profiles applications will install appropriately.

Issues using the Profiles PDF Printing functionality 1. Professional: ‘Save As PDF’ and ‘Send PDF’ functionality will not work.

2. Forecaster: ‘Print Preview’ will not work

Note: There are no known issues with printing Client reports directly to a printer with Windows Vista.

It is recommended that users install the Annual Tax and Statistical Update Patches – Phase 1 for Professional and Forecaster when available in late February 2007. The patches will allow the ‘Save As PDF’, ‘Send PDF’ and ‘Print Preview’ functions to work. However, users may experience minor formatting issues within the Client reports when printed to PDF.

Enterprise customers please note: Contact your EISI Relationship Manager if your firm is using or plans to upgrade to Windows Vista. Also, Profiles applications will not function properly when upgrading to Vista for customers who are using the Static PDF Print Driver option with their custom installations

*This issue only occurs with Microsoft’s VISTA Ultimate edition

EISI anticipates addressing the remaining issues in order to fully support Microsoft Windows Vista in the Profiles Annual Tax and Statistical Update - Phase 2 releases, which are planned for July 2007.
